Youth Productions

Our Youth Theater Productions feature young actors ranging in ages from 7-17 and provide a full theater experience, including costumes, lighting, props, backgrounds, and more. Productions include both theatrical plays and musicals.

Upcoming Shows

Auditions

Auditions are held at Playhouse 38 approximately 2-3 months prior to show dates. Participants are asked to prepare a 1-2 minute monologue and be prepared to read from the script.

For musicals, participants are asked to prepare a musical theater song, up to 32 bars, to be performed acapella, and a monologue or cut from a story or poem of no more than one minute in length. Additionally, participants will be taught a song, a short dance combination, and may be asked to read from the script.

Regular Youth Productions at Playhouse 38 are “no-cut” productions, meaning everyone who auditions will be a part of the show.  For Playhouse 38 Youth Company productions, however, not everyone who auditions will be cast.

A discount is available for returning cast members and siblings.

An Enchanted Bookshop Christmas

It’s four days before Christmas and Miss Margie, the scatterbrained owner of the shop, is thrilled to have two very special guests — her serious-minded sister Ellen and book-loving niece Annabelle. Ellen was recently laid off from her position as an astronomy professor, and she’s certain she’ll never find a job again. Her luck changes, however, when high-tech billionaire Philip Brantley stops in at the shop and Margie convinces him to hire Ellen for his new space project. With Ellen out shopping, Margie has a brainstorm to wrap the bookmark that Philip wrote his phone number on and give it to Ellen as a Christmas present. After all, what could possibly go wrong?

Rehearsals

Rehearsals vary for each show, but will generally held three times a week — on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 5:00 and 8:30 pm, and on Saturdays between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm.  The week before the show is tech week, where all of the costumes, lighting, sound, and stage moves are rehearsed, and attendance is mandatory for everyone cast.

Performances

Shows are typically performed on Friday night, Saturday afternoon and night, and Sunday afternoon. Some shows are performed over two weekends.

Tickets for youth productions are $10. They can be purchased online at genevaparks.org; in-person at Sunset Community Center and Stephen Persinger Recreation Center; or by calling 630-232-4542. Any remaining seats the day of the show will be sold at the Playhouse 38 box office. Concessions, including bottled water, bottled soda, juice, and candy, are sold on-site at the box office prior to the show and at show intermission.
